about

With the upsetting confirmation of the Tk’emlúps 215 in late May 2021, the work of the SPS Indigenous Ensemble to undermine and overcome the original Canadian Residential Schools/Indian Act agenda seems all the more important. This remix is released to hopefully raise awareness and increase the exposure of the Ensemble. Coming out of the Covd-19 pandemic and into extensive budget cuts, every effort helps.

This remix was created in a similar manner to The Orb's 1990's remixes of classic Pink Floyd cuts: without access to the original stems, The Orb took excerpts of the finished recordings adding beats, textures and additional found and live performed/produced material to create interesting sonic pieces that felt like variations on the originally stated themes.

So, in like manner, the 2018 final cut of It Is Ours has been sliced and diced for this 2021 presentation of the song. The narrative lyrical verses have been removed and the dynamics of the choruses presented have been heightened through additional instrumentation. Material from a live performance of the song as an electronic/spoken word piece in February 2018- a full 9 months before the actual tracks were laid down in the RAIS studio- has been applied liberally as sonic glue to hold the pieces together. The Onimito 'powwow' section of the recording kicks the door in (and sounds really great in a moving car) before the final flute statement that leaves us to reflect to the soft ringing of the Reconciliation chimes on Saskatoon's 'The Coming Spring' sculpture as the wind moves past it.

Important note: Grateful thanks to Don Speidel who, on behalf of the Indigenous Ensemble and the Indigenous artists on the recording, granted permission to present these performances in this new way. Hiy hiy

lyrics

See, no one scooped me from my home
No one took my hope away
No one sought to civilize me from my people's ancient ways
No one broke my spirit with violence
No one silenced me with fear
Of a coming retribution, should I whisper in someone's ear
No one entrusted me to the underfunded and under qualified
No one threatened my dear parents if they listened when I cried
No one dragged me back to some hell when I made it into town
No one whipped me when I tried to burn that madhouse down

But this is not my story, it is ours
This is not my story but it is ours

[in Plains Cree...]

“Watch the dancers as they dance

Dancers- start dancing”

Little child came and sat beside me in the park
With rainbows on her face and peace in her heart
We listened to the music and we watched the dancers dance
